Welcome to Issue 11 of Be Informed

Welcome to the latest edition of our client newsletter. I hope 2015 has been a successful year to date and is delivering on all your positive expectations.

As we approach the end of another financial year, for many businesses, that means one thing – tax planning. It also brings with it an opportunity to conduct a careful review of your business and implement some important forward planning.

This process may involve a review of your business structures and strategy, evaluating the competitive environment for potential opportunities and threats, and both short and long-term budget forecasting.

One of the likely threats that any review is likely to highlight is that of digital disruption. At our firms’ own strategic planning days Tim Reed, Managing Director of MYOB, gave an excellent presentation on this topic and it needs to be on every business’ agenda. To summarise, digital disruption is change that is enabled by digital technologies that occur at a pace that disrupts established industries or ways of doing business. An example is the way that Uber, through its app, has completely changed the taxi industry throughout the world.

From a firm perspective, I’m pleased to announce a number of recent internal promotions, including the appointment of our newest Directors, Matthew Illman and Babis Mavrakis, and the promotion of Paula Liddle, David Martland and Lee Fuller as Principals. With 19 Directors and 150 staff, we are now the largest locally owned and operated accounting and advisory firms serving the mid-market and family businesses in South Australia.

These promotions have been driven by demand for the breadth and depth of our business advisory services and will continue to build our specialisation in this area. There remains significant uncertainty and dampened confidence in the South Australian business community, and we are seeing more mid-market and private businesses seeking out our guidance and support.

Finally, I would like to reflect on another recent success – our sponsorship of the CFO Series Symposium. The annual symposium, held in February this year, brought together Chief Financial Officers from across South Australia for two-days of thought-stimulating professional development. Our Audit and Assurance Director Grant Martinella gave an excellent presentation on data mining, which is an emerging tool in the fight against employee fraud.

I hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter.

Kind Regards

Jamie McKeough
Managing Director
