Here are our top interview tips to help ensure you put your best foot forward.

It is perfectly normal for you to feel nervous before an interview with a firm you really want to work for. If you’ve been invited to interview, you’re already doing well. Remember that the people interviewing you want you to do well. While it may be intimidating to sit across from a Director or someone a few years ahead of you in their career, they were once sitting where you are. Try to relax and enjoy the experience as much as you can and be yourself.

Be authentic and let your personality shine through. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. If successful, this will also help the interviewers to decide which team would be the best fit for you and who may be your ideal buddy and/or mentor.

Use the STAR method to prepare answers to potential questions and practise your responses out loud. That is, when responding to behavioural based interview questions, ensure you cover the Situation, Task, Action and Result in your answer.

Take the opportunity to interview the interviewees. Often there will be a manager or Director with years of experience with the firm and accounting industry in front of you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when given the chance. Think about what is important to you for your future career and prepare questions accordingly.

This one may seem obvious, but first impressions do count in an interview situation.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early and leave yourself enough time for any travel implications – this will help calm the nerves. If you’re early, grab a coffee and read over some notes! Try to have an early night, so you are bright and alert in the interview.
